The 2020/2021 MTN Elite One Championship will be played in two pools/groups, of 11 teams (Pool A) and 10 teams (Pool B). A total of 21 teams are taking part in the competition.
The top two teams of each pool will play in a playoff to decide the champion and runners up of the league at the end of the pool phase. the top team in pool A will play against the second in pool B and vice versa. The winners of the two matches will meet in the final of the play off to determine the champions and vice and the losers will also meet in the second match to determine the 3rd and 4th placed teams of the championship.
A total of five clubs will be releagted into the inferior league at the end of the championship. The last two clubs of each pool will be relegated alongside the loser of the playoff between the 9th and 8th teams of pool A and B in that order into the elite two championship.
