Top 10 Cameroon National football team (Indomitable Lions) scorers of all time as of January 25th, 2023

Cameroon has always had a knack for producing incredible footballers in every department of the game be in goalkeeping, defence, midfield and attack, and while that doesn’t always immediately translate into national team success, it most definitely has for some of them.

The Indomitable Lions are one of the most successful teams to compete within African international competitions and the world at large, winning five Nations Cups (AFCON), Olympic Gold Medal in 2000, and a 1990 nose-bleed high finish in the world cup.

Even when they aren’t sweeping up silverware, their incredible players are putting on high-octane performances. Here is a look at the all-time top 10 goal-scorers for the Cameroon national football team.

1. Samuel Eto’o Fils

Cameroon Career: 1997-2014

Cameroon Appearance: 118

Cameroon Goals: 56

Eto’o Fils has won everything except for the world cup. He always scores when it mattered. The guy was a master of finals-always ready to score in the finals and he always did that. He helped win Cameroon the 2000 and 2002 AFCON alongside Patrick Mboma. He was also a part of the team that won the 2000 Olympic Gold medal. Individually, he has won everything in Africa with his national team. The accolades are endless to list. That’s just Samuel Eto’o Fils, as spectacular as he was.

2. Roger Milla

Cameroon Career: 1973-1994

Cameroon Appearance: 102

Cameroon Goals: 43

Regarded as the one of the best ever Cameroonian and African players, Roger Milla helped Cameroon win the 1984 and 1988 AFCON and even went on to win the highest goalscorer in the 1986 and 1988 AFCON. He is the second oldest ever player to appear in a world cup aged 42 after Colombia’s Faryd Mondragón [43]. He also hold the record for the oldest goal-scorer at the world cup.

3. Vincent Aboubakar

Cameroon Career: 2010-Present

Cameroon Appearance: 94

Cameroon Goals: 35

Vincent Aboukabar who is still active has been the best Cameroon striker since Samuel Eto’o retired. He helped Cameroon win the 2017 AFCON finals as his over head dribble-kick saw the Egyptians fall short in a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon. Vincent Aboukabar’s thrilling 8 goals in the AFCON 2021 and 2 goals at the world cup 2022 means that he surpasses Cameroon legend Francoise Omam-Biyik and former wonder man Patrick Mboma with the later playing lesser matches for the Cameroon Indomitable Lions than Vincent Aboubakar.

7. Jean-Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

9. Andre Kana-Biyik

Cameroon Career: 1985-1994

Cameroon Appearance: 80

Cameroon Goals: 15

We cannot talk defensive football in Cameroon without mentioning Andre Kana-Biyik. The only defender to feature in goal-scorers chart, Man had aggresive defensive agenda like a lion which even saw him being sent off in Cameroon’s opening game of the 1990 World Cup, a game against Argentina that Cameroon won 1–0. His brother, François Omam-Biyik, scored the goal that defeated the South American giant.

10. Geremi Njitap

Cameroon Career: 1996-2010

Cameroon Appearance: 118

Cameroon Goals: 13

Geremi Njitap hold the record for the second longest serving Cameroonian international with Samuel Eto’o just after Rigobert Song (137 appearance). The multipurpose and reliable Geremi Njitap was a feared beast who could adapt to every position in the field except goalkeeping. Mostly used as a Midfielder or right back, it’s surprising to see Njitap in this list. However being a master of dangerous crosses and a freekick maestro, no wonder he is in here. The former Real Madrid, Chelse and Newcastle United player played in three world cups for Cameroon and numerous AFCON.

Conclusion

Notable mentions are the likes of Kunde Emmanuel (1979-1992) with 17 goals, Tarl Toko Ekambi (2015 – Present) with 10 goals, Bonaventure Djonkep (1981 -1990) with 10 goals, Clinton N’jie (2014 -present) with 10 goals.

Will Vincent Aboubakar and Choupo Moting go all the way to break more records held by Cameroon football legends?
