The year 2021 has seen the continues rise of talented African goalkeepers, who continued to grab the limelight. BraggsSports.com takes a look at the top five African goalkeepers in 2021 per club competitions ONLY.

We have used a number of statistics (clean sheets, save percentage, goals against and expected goals against) from last season to quantify our rankings  as well as a player’s overall contribution to the game in recent times.

All statistics are supplied by FBREF.com for the 2020/21 domestic season and are correct as of the publish date.

5. Denis Onyango (Uganda / Mamelodi Sundowns)

The Uganda captain remains one of the best goalkeepers in the African continent having played an instrumental role in helping Mamelodi Sundowns clinch an historic back-back domestic Championship – the Absa Premiership (Premier Soccer League) title.

Denis Onyango Renowned for his penalty-saving and his play in one-on-one situations helped Mamelodi Sundowns reach the CAF Champions League quarter finals but were knock out by a tough former Sundown’s coach Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly.

 4. Alfred Gomis  (Senegal / Rennes)

The 27-year-old second choice Senegalese shot-stopper, Alfred Gomis has been one of the most reliable African goalkeepers in Europe over the past few years. On 29 September 2020, the Senegal international glovesman arrived Stade Rennais FC on a five-year deal worth between €14m to €16m.  

He played a key role in helping Rennes come close to qualifying for the Europa League but stilled helped them get a spot in the UEFA Conference League.

3. Mohamed El Shenawy (Egypt / Al Ahly)

The Egypt international is arguably the best keeper on the African continent at the moment, having played an integral role in helping Al Ahly secure the CAF Champions League 2021 trophy, their second in a row and the African Champions Super Cup in 2021

His colossal performances earned his side their place at the FIFA Club World Cup Japan (Japan backed-off from hosting it) 2021.

2. Andre Onana (Cameroon / Ajax)

Andre Onana is a supreme goalkeeper when it comes to stopping the ball going into the net. He helped Ajax to a domestic double of Netherlands Championship (Eredivisie) and Netherlands cup despite his season being cut half in February.

The 24-year-old Cameroon international was linked with Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund. But in February 2021, Onana was given one-year doping ban by UEFA after failing out-of-competition test – the doping suspension applies to all football activities. André Onana remains one of the most-wanted goalkeepers in Europe.

1. Edouard Mendy (Senegal / Chelsea)

Edouard Mendy joined Chelsea on September 2020 in a £22million deal from Rennes. Mendy conceded just one goal in his first seven appearances in a Chelsea shirt, and became the first Chelsea goalkeeper to kick off his Premier League career with three clean sheets since Petr Cech in 2004. He posted an impressive 5 clean sheets in a row, the first for the Blues since 2010. 

Edouard Mendy miracle performances at Stamford Bridge gave Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start at Chelsea after Chelsea sacked Franck Lampard half way in the season. Edouard  Mendy went ahead to help Chelsea lift up the Champions League 2021 in a 1-0 world class performance against Manchester City.
