Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu to reject Kaizer Chiefs interest despite not wanting to play for Ligue 1 side Amiens again – Agent speaks

Kaizer Chiefs have been dominating the headlines these passed few weeks and especially this week  following confirmation of their marquee signing Keagan Dolly.

However some supporters flooded the club with requests to add his Bafana Bafana teammate Bongani Zungu to the list.

Bongani Zungu still has a contract with Amiens until June 2022 and if Amakhosi wanted to make a statement they would have to break the bank for his services given reports in France put his value at just over R50-million ($3,411,304M).

What appears to have gone under the radar is the fact that prior to his loan move to Rangers in Scotland last season, Zungu signed a new deal with his parent club Amiens.

Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew from France, Bongani Zungu’s agent Badara Wague, explains;

“I think what created the confusion is that when Bongani left to go to Rangers, Amiens didn’t publish any information about the fact that he renewed his contract for one more year. No one knew that his contract will end in 2022 and not 2021,”

“Also, Transfermarkt, a website people use for reference says his contract ends in June 2021 – so everyone thinks he is a free agent and wondering what is happening. But that is not the case, he still has a contract with Amiens.”

Zungu is still currently in South Africa and working on returning to the club, but with Covid-19 restrictions the visa application has been a stumbling block.

“It’s very difficult to get him a visa and get him back to France and that is why he is still in SA, we think it may take up to 10 days before this can be resolved because the process is so complicated,” Badara added.

“It’s true that his ambition is not to play for Amiens this season, but he is under contract and will respect that if he has to. But he wants to leave and has several options – his mind is no longer at Amiens. All the regular players have left the club since they got relegated from Ligue 1, so it is not the same ambition, which means the project has totally changed. Of course he respects Amiens because they gave him the chance to get a step up, but staying in Ligue 2 is not an option for him.”

What about the Premier Soccer League, with Chiefs?

“This is important. SA is an option for Bongani, definitely, but not now,” says Badara.

“He loves his country so much and he is following the developments there with how Patrice Motsepe became CAF president, how his ex-coaches in Rulani Mokwena and Pitso Mosimane are doing well with their respective teams Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly. He also wished his friend Dolly well when he signed for Chiefs. But for the moment, maybe for two or three years, he wants to explore options overseas. He was happy to see SA get back one of the country’s biggest talents, and maybe this is what created the confusion. For the moment, Bongani’s mind is not on coming back to South Afrca.”
