Cameroon has been home to some of the biggest football teams in the Africa as well as producing some of the finest footballers around the world. The Cameroon MTN Elite One Championship has had a lot of teams that have been successful for a few number number of seasons. Certain clubs have been very consistent over the years.
However, continentally, only one club has shown its mark and that is Canon Sport club of Yaounde.

Below is the list of the top 7 most successful Cameroon football clubs in both international and national stages.
NB: Our Rankings are base only on TOP Division Football after Cameroon got its independence in 1960.
7. Caïman Douala – 3 Trophies
The Douala base club was founded in 1927. The club won many trophies before independence in 1960 which include 7 Cameroon territorial Championships and 4 Cameroon cups.
However, after the formation of the Cameroon Premier League now called MTN Elite One Championship, the club has won it 3 times in the last century between 1962 and 1975. This century, Caiman of Douala has been absent from top flight Cameroon football for at least 90% of times.
Continentally, Caiman of Douala made just one appearance in international stages and that was in 1978 CAF Cup Winners’ Cup now called Confederation of African Football Cup which the got knocked out in the quarter finals.

6. Racing Club of Bafoussam – 5 Trophies
The club that produced one of Cameroon and world’s most deadliest winger and midfielder Geremi Njitap in the 90’s.
Racing Club of Bafoussam superimposed themselves in the last century between the late 1980’s and late 1990’s in both national and international stages which saw them win the Cameroon Premier League 4 times and the Cameroon cup once while qualifying for the African Cup of Champions Clubs on 4 occasions which all ended with tears. Racing club of Bafoussam also participated in one occasion of African Cup Winners’ Cup but got knocked out in the first round.
Since the start of the new century, Racing club of Bafoussam has been dormant for at least 80% of times in all top division football stages.

5. Oryx Douala – 9 Trophies
A lot of readers will be surprise to hear this name because it has been completely extinct in the new Cameron and continental football century.
In the 1960’s, Oryx Douala was the talking name. Just in 10 years period (1960’s), oryx won everything nationally and continentally.

4. Tonnerre Kalara Club of Yaounde – 10 Trophies
The club which produced some of Cameroon’s finest footballers like Roger Milla, Rigobert Song and the former FIFA World Player of the Year, Liberian George Weah. It was founded in 1934.
Tonnerre was the talking name between 1970 and 1980’s. National Tonnerre dominated Cameroon football but however failed on countless occasions in continental competitions.
With over 8 seasons in CAF competitions, Tonnerre managed to win just one title within their best years (1970-1990) in football.
Since the start of the new century, Tonnerre has only appeared once in a CAF competition and that was in the CAF Cup 2002 which the were knock down 4-1 in a two leg finals by JS Kabylie, the same Algerian club which knockout Coton Sport of Garoua in the Semi finals this 2021.

3. Union Sportive Douala – 13 Trophies
It was founded in 1958. It did not take too long for Union Douala to make its name known after which it was founded.
However, the club does not really have any specific time frame of dominance although we can still say between the late 1970’s and 1980’s.
The Douala base club has shown its mark on all stages of football both in Cameroon and in Africa. The club has been widely involved in Cameroon and CAF football since its creation until 2015 when they have not made it to any CAF competition again.

2. Coton Sport of Garoua – 24 Trophies
The club was founded in 1986 and since then, they were campaigning in the lower leagues until they were promoted to the country’s Premier League now called MTN Elite One in 1992.
Since 1996 Coton Sport has dominated Cameroon football winning 15 league titles in the process.
In 2008 the club finished runners up in the CAF Champions League, losing to Al Ahly SC of Egypt in the final. Coton Sport also managed to reach the CAF cup finals in 2003 but lost to Moroccan club Raja Casablanca.

1. Canon Yaounde – 25 Trophies
Canon Sport of Yaounde was founded in 1930. The club mainly dominated during the first century of its existence. The new century has been the club fail to produce what her fans expect from them.
Canon Sport dominated Cameroon football in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Although they weren’t too dominant in the 1990’s, still, they produced some magical seasons.
Canon Sport of Yaounde was a team to beat both nationally and continentally between 1970 and 1980 which saw them win all possible trophies.
Canon Yaounde is the only Cameroon football club which stands amongst the most successful clubs in African intercontinental competitions.
This century, Canon Sport has been a regular participant in the CAF Champions League, until the 2009-2010 season which they have not appeared in the competition again.
