A Summary of Real Madrid’s President Florentino Perez’s interview on El Larguero as he refuses to give up on the European Super League

Here you will find all the details of Florentino Perez’s interview with Jose Ramon as it happened on Spanish Radio El Larguero.

On their draw against Getafe

Florentino Perez : “The team played very well last night, especially the first half. We are still fighting on all fronts and have to end the season well.”

On the Vision of the Super League

Florentino : “We were working last night until 1 A.M. We have been working many years on this project(European Super League). Have not explained it very well, perhaps.”

Florentino “I am a bit sad, disappointed. We have been working three years on this project, on fighting the current financial situation in Spanish football. It is easy to understand – you cannot touch La Liga, so you look for more money midweek and UCL format is obsolete.”

On the opposition from UEFA

Florentino “I have never seen aggression greater on the part of the president of UEFA and other presidents of Liga, it was orchestrated, it surprised it all. Never seen anything like it – insults, threats, as if we had killed someone, killed football.”

On the Super League project and fear from within some core teams

Florentino: “We are just working on saving football, after this pandemic. Madrid income falling from 900m to 600m this year. We have worked very hard on something that would satisfy everyone – and we did expect such a response.”

Florentino: “There was someone in the English 6 clubs who did not have much interest. That started to affect the others, there was fear. One of the English clubs was never really convinced.”

Florentino: “There was a campaign, totally manipulated, that we were going to finish the national leagues. That we were ending football, it was terrible. But we were working for football to survive.”

Florentino: “There are people with privileges who do not want to lose them, and are willing to run clubs, although when the clubs are ruined they will lose their privileges.”

On the opposition from UEFA (continues…)

Florentino: “The English clubs tried to do something, but they were being told they were killing football. But there is no other solution, than the Super League. Or somebody invents something else.”

TRENDING NOW

Florentino: “They are leaving due to UEFA putting on a show, which surprised me. I don’t want to get into it with the UEFA president, but he needs to be able to talk. It was like we had thrown an atomic bomb. They did not let us explain, as they did not want anything to change.”

Florentino: “It cannot be that in England, the six lose money, and 14 make money. In Spain the top three lose money, and the others make money. It cannot continue – at the moment the rich are those who are losing money.”

Florentino: “This is a pyramid, and the money runs down, there would be money for everyone. If Nadal plays Federer, everyone watches, if Nadal plays the number 80 in the world, nobody watches.”

On Milan Juventus and Barca leaving the Super League

Florentino: “Juventus and Milan have not left. Barca are thinking about it. Maybe we can change it a bit – that the top four in England enter, the top four in Spain. The important thing is that the big teams play each other, so the kids will watch football.”

New format for Super League?

Florentino: “Football is maintained by the biggest clubs – it always has been. Cristiano vs Messi was great, not just for Madrid and Barca, but for Spanish football, and football in general.”

Florentino: “Somebody has to give us another format, to earn more money. As without earning more money, this will all die.”

Florentino: “There are games that nobody watches – the truth is I struggle to watch them. In Spain, in England, in Italy.”

Florentino: “It is not just a chosen few. The 15 clubs founder members are those who have earned it. The clubs who have made UCL semis and finals, and who have fans all around the world.”

Florentino: “We are open for other ideas, but if a club from a smaller league, say Turkey, wants to enter, the problem is that the money comes from the big games, where there is competition. The games without competition don’t make money.”

Florentino: “A big guy wears a big suit, a small guy wears a small suit. Everyone has to be comfortable with the suit they wear. And the reality comes from the TV viewer figures. This is not capricious, I am just trying to help.”

Florentino: “The contracts are signed by serious people, businessmen who know this world. We agreed last night to wait and to try and explain better, and we are open to other ideas.”

Florentino: “FFP is fundamental, but not flexible, it must be strict.”

Florentino: “The problems is they (Ceferin) killed us the very next day, with terrible aggression. We have made some mistakes for sure. But they knew what we were going to do, and were waiting for us. Those who do not want to lose their privileges.”

Florentino: “The English PM said things, then the fans… people wanted to damage us. But when all this passes, and we see the reality, lets see what happens. These clubs are going to lose millions of euros, and cannot do that, apart from those in England.”

Florentino: Perez: “It’s impossible to make signings like Mbappé and Haaland without the Super League.”

Journalist: “So it’s over, you’re not signing Mbappé?

Florentino Perez: “That’s not what I said. That’s for next season. Right now we’re working on this season.”

Florentino: “Football changes, and new generations appear and ask for different things. We think they want the same as us, but they don’t. Today there are many distractions for kids, we need to get them to watch football, with competitive games, so TV pays.”

Florentino Perez; “Ramos renewal? Players have to make an effort because of COVID-19. That’s all I’m saying.”

Florentino Perez: “Life changes. When two decades pass, new generations come demanding new things. It is wrong to think that they think like us. Football is a global sport and to take care of it we must play more competitive matches.”

Florentino Perez: “We are heading towards a €180 million loss this season.”

Florentino Perez: “I think that the Super League is not a project to insult us. We have had to request a precautionary measure precisely to protect ourselves and the judge has said that it is LEGAL.”

Florentino Perez: “Ramos’ situation doesn’t depend just on him, it also depends on Madrid, some players are taking paycuts, we will sell some players, we will do some things, so there are a lot of factors.”

Florentino Perez: “The Super League is NOT dead. We will keep going.”

Florentino Perez: “I know Mbappe. I know everybody and I’m friends with everybody.’

Florentino Perez: “How could I not like Ramos to continue? I love everyone. Let’s see what happens next year.”

Florentino Perez: “When I took over, Madrid could not pay its players. We changed the world with the Galactico signings. Now after COVID-19, things have to change again.”

Florentino Perez: “Asking the socios if they agree with the Super League? Should I also ask them what players they want me to sign?”

Florentino Perez: “I am not tired, even at this age (74). All my life I went to bed late and got up early.”

Perez insists all 12 clubs signed a ‘legally binding contract’ and ‘nobody has left yet’

Florentino Perez: “The ONLY thing that will change is the UCL  for the Super League. Domestic leagues are untouchable.”

Florentino “Nobody has yet paid the penalization fee for leaving. We are almost all still in this, they have not left yet.”

Florentino Perez: “How high is the penalty fee for clubs who want to leave? No comment.”

Florentino Perez: “We said we’d start the Super League because it’s urgent.”

On Chelsea fans protest

Florentino Perez: “Chelsea fans’ protest? They were 40 people.”

Florentino Perez on Chelsea fans protesting: “If you want, I will tell you who took them there.”

Florentino Perez: “I know who brought those 40 Chelsea guys to protest.”

Florentino Perez: “Do you think Real Madrid’s partners are idiots? If you told them they would play against the greats every Tuesday and Wednesday, would they not prefer that?”

Florentino Perez: “I want an educated UEFA president, who does not insult and who does not speak as he did the other day. We are in a democratic Europe. He should set an example.”

Florentino Perez: “No one has paid a fine for leaving the Super League, because they did not leave YET. But if they do, of course they WILL pay a fine.”

Florentino Perez: “Some people have been manipulated, and everyone knows who’s responsible for that manipulation.”

Florentino Perez: “We all have to be kind people, talk calmly. This has not been done by the UEFA president.”

Florentino Perez: “The people that took the 40 Chelsea fans to Stamford Bridge, are the same people who put those anti-ESL shirts on Cadiz tonight.”

On Real Madrid team and the transfer window

Florentino Perez: “Change the Real Madrid squad? We have the best players in the world.”

Florentino Perez: “Our attack is full of children, so we HAVE to do SOMETHING this summer.”

Florentino Perez: “I can’t imagine Real Madrid without Zidane next season.”

Florentino Perez: “We have a great defence, a great midfield, but yes we have to do something in the frontline.”

Florentino Perez: “We have Rodrygo, Asensio. We have many young players who are very good. Signing young players will have it’s results.”

Florentino Perez: “Varane? If players don’t want to stay at Madrid they can leave.”

Florentino Perez: “Klopp angry about Valdebebas? Valdebebas and Kiev had the same result. 3-1.”

Florentino Perez: ”Bernabeu will open for fans surely, but I don’t think it will be this season.”

Florentino Perez: “Will there be a transfer window revolution this summer? No, of course not.”

Florentino Perez: “If we don’t sign Mbappé this summer, I don’t think any fan will shoot himself in the head. They know we’re doing our best, and if things don’t happen, it’s because they’re impossible.”

Florentino Perez: “Modric renewed his contract.”

Florentino Perez: “We renewed Modric a long time ago, but not with Ramos, I don’t know why.”

Florentino Perez: “Zidane? You always ask him the same thing, about continuing. One day he will leave and if does, he deserves to leave as a legend. Him or we will decide when it is. But he will not wake up in the morning and have been kicked out.”

Florentino Perez: “We did not reach an agreement with Ramos yet. I love him as a son, but I did everything I can for him. The ball is in his court.”

Florentino Perez: “I know Barça’s members well. 99% of them will choose the Super League over #UCL .”

Florentino Perez: “Bayern Munich and PSG joining the Super League was never guaranteed, even though I wanted them to be included.”

Florentino Perez: “The rumors of Ronaldo coming back to Madrid are just rumors from his entourage. Nothing else.”

Florentino Perez: “Atletico Madrid’s board were in a meeting and are in low spirits after all the nonsense that was said. What we are trying to do is lift everyone’s spirits.”

Florentino Perez: “I always liked Pique as a player. What is said about Cristiano and Messi can be said about him and Ramos.”

Florentino Perez on UEFA’s president saying Chelsea and Real Madrid are not playing: “Why?”

Florentino Perez: “We will work with everyone on the Super League. This is what Real Madrid does. We are always open to everything that will improve football. It’s impossible to satisfy all clubs.”

Florentino Perez: “We did not do anything wrong in order to not be allowed to play the UCL  semifinal.”

Florentino Perez: “In basketball, we play the Euroleague alongside the domestic league. Bayern do the same. It’s normal. Is football different or what? In basketball, they don’t protest. The Euroleague saved us in basketball.”
